12 â Captured
Virginia woke with a start.
The wind howled past the cold panes, whipping the relentless snow into clumps on the sills. It hadnât stopped since this morning.
Footsteps downstairs. Faint, but recognizable.
A chill spiraled down Virginiaâs back, despite the heat trapped inside the nest of blankets.
This time, she was ready. She slid a pillow into her cozy spot, and tucked the blankets back down the bed. She picked her phone up off the side table, then slipped down the opposite side, away from the door. The door was already ajar, and she left the hallway light on.
Virginia flicked the phone into camera mode, and began to videotape whatever was happening. She needed it, if only to play it for herself the next day to prove that she wasnât making this up.
But the footsteps were audible, and coming closer. Hopefully the camera was picking this up. But that didnât bring her any comfort right now.
Why are you filming this, idiot? Grab a weapon!
And do what with a weapon? What good did it do Sage to have all those guns, and knives lying around? She was still a wreck of a human. She had no idea what she was missing out on.
Footsteps walking up the stairs.
Virginia lay flat against the ground, the camera edge of her phone peeking around the bed, while she watched the screen. Her heart was pounding so hard she could feel it thumping the floor.
Footsteps at the top landing. And then a pair of boots landed toe first outside her door. Quietly. Creeping. Something dark filled the crack of the door, a jacket, snow pants. They were looking in.
Could they see the bed?
Could they see the camera?
Virginia held her breath. Who the fuck would be here now? Nobody else had a key. Was it the same person as the other night? Was it Ernie? Or Sage?
Too many questions. She tried to steady her shaking hand, pressed against the floor, and leaned against the bed corner.
The light seeped in from the hallway once again. The figure blocking the light moved on. The footsteps continued softly down the hall.
Virginia had studied stage combat. She knew about martial arts, self-defense, and how to make a weapon look very threatening. But something told her this wasnât going to help her now, far away from everyone and everything. Whatever this dark presence was, it wasnât going to scare easily.
It was too quiet.
The footsteps stopped. Now there was only the sound of Virginiaâs heart beating too fast. Her breaths coming in spurts.
Tomorrow, she would leave this cabin, and never come back. This little experiment had run its course. Whatever the future might hold, she had a good run of being alone, and sober.
The footsteps returned, coming back down the hall toward her bedroom. But they passed by, sneaking down the stairs.
Virginia picked up her phone, leaving the camera recording. She didnât have a face, only a silhouette. Someone tall, most likely a man judging by weight, and dress. Someone who knew how to get into a locked door without smashing it.
